Flugel Horn - Gail Curran
Gail was 11 years old when she began playing the tenor horn. She played for Thornton Cleveleys Band and Dutton Forshaw Motors Band, before joining the Freckleton Band (championship section) on solo horn around 1988. In 1995 she moved off tenor horn and began to play flugel horn.
Shortly after moving to Burnley in 1996, Gail briefly joined Norwest Co-Op Band before moving to Trafford Band (both championship section). Gail enjoyed much success with the Trafford Band in particular, and was deeply saddened when the band announced it was to fold.
In 1999 Gail joined the BMP Europe Goodshaw Band. Following the birth of her son in 2000, she took a break from playing. During her time away from “Banding” she achieved a BA (Hons) degree in Applied Social Studies and a PGCE. She is currently studying for a Masters degree. She rejoined BMP Europe Goodshaw Band in July 2007.
Gail’s favourite brass band composer is Prof Philip Wilby. Two of her favourite contest pieces are Wilby’s Paganini Variations and Lowry Sketchbook. She is also a great admirer of the works of Wilfred Heaton, especially Contest Music. Gail is a lover of jazz music, and is a die-hard fan of the legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsallis.
