2nd Eb Bass - John Spencer - Band President

John started to learn to play the Cornet in 1942, when he was just 10 years old, following in his Grandfathers footsteps, who played for 'Goodshaw' in the 1890's.
Over the following 65 years, he has played several instruments including Flugel Horn,Suprano Cornet,Baritone and eventually the EE Flat Bass, which he still plays.
In 1946 he played in the First Rochdale Contest after the war, the adjudicator was Fred Mortimer and Goodshaw won first prize. Over the years, John has enjoyed the priviledge of playing for 15 conductors, learning all the time and has actually participated in 7 Daily Herald Championships in London.
John was presented with the Deploma of Merit for his 50 years service to the movement by the N.W.A.B.B.A. His 60 years service was acknowledged by the band and in 2004 John was invited to take the position of Band President  .
John has many interests which include cricket and a passion for Shire Horses, being a life member of the Society. But his main interest has always been Brass Banding. His favourite Championship Band is the Brighouse and Rastrick Band of which he is a patron. His favourite piece is 'The Waverley Overture', by Berlioz plus any Hymn played at the start of rehersal.
John has advice for all Bandsmen-The only voice that should be heard in the rehersal is the Musical director, ovserve this and you will learn a great deal. John's ambition and hope is to continue playing his whole life through. John lives in Rawtenstall with his wife.
