A Big Band Night to Remember
The BMP Europe Goodshaw Band held a Big Band night on Friday 4th July 2008, at St Mary’s Chambers in Rawtenstall. A magnificent venue and a full house, the BMP Europe Goodshaw Band entertained the audience with popular big band classics, such as ‘Mack the Knife’ ‘New York New York’ and Robbie Williams ‘Swing When Your Winning’.
Not your usual brass band concert, the band was aiming for a much more relaxed feel for the evening where the audience could feel free to get up to get food and drinks while the band played on. However the audience attentively listed to all the pieces that the band played and according to their comments at the end of the night, had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The audience was treated to a solo performance of ‘The Lazy Trumpeter’ from our solo cornet player Helen Toole, and ‘Misty’ from our flugel horn player Gail Curran. Both pieces were played superbly by both ladies, and the trombone section Edwin Leach, Amanda Tasker and Brian Daber entertained the audience with ‘Basin Street Blues’. Instead of the usual applause at the end of pieces, some of the numbers ended with the sound of wolf whistles and even a scream at one point, showing the audience was very impressed with this very different style of musical concert by a brass band.
The band had a guest conductor for the evening, and we would like to say a big thank you to Iain McKnight for all his hard work in rehearsals and for doing an amazing job of comparing and conducting for the concert. A raffle was held by the band, and we would like to thank Ashoka of Rawtentsall and Winfields of Haslingden, for kindly donating prizes to the band.

North West Area Contest
Spirits were high on Sunday after BMP (Europe) Goodshaw scooped a pot at the North West Area Championships in the Winter Gardens at Blackpool. The band on hearing we had been drawn to play 2nd in a massive line up of 20 bands were a little anxious as no matter who you have adjudicating on a day of so many bands in a contest its a big ask to expect to be going home with a prize no matter how good your performance is.
However even though the band in the last few contests have been incredibly unlucky with two draws to play number 1 and then the number 2 draw yesterday still walked on to the Opera House Stage heads high and set our feet firmly down with a rock steady performance. Little criticism from a few well respected names in the audience and from one well known adjudicator it was a performance that was going to be difficult to beat.
As the day went on and more bands took to the stage to give their rendition of "Dark side of the moon" by Paul Lovett Cooper we all started to get more excited as people were still saying how much BMP ( Europe ) Goodshaw band since being under the musical direction of Kevin Gibbs (formerly principle trombone of the Famous Black Dyke, Brighouse and Rastrick, Fairies,) sounded more like a second section band than a third section band and that our performance of the piece was very likely to get us a place at the Nationals held in Harrogate later this year. Sadly the adjudicator Mr. James Scott saw fit to place us 6th place but out of a line up of a huge 20 bands competing on Sunday and playing number two it could have been far worse, And obviously we played such a solid performance he remembered us after what must have been a mammoth day of listening for Mr. Scott.
This however for the BMP (Europe) Goodshaw band was the best performance to date on a contest stage with us all having little to say about any serious flaws in the performance backed up by many popular and well respected musicians were agreeing with us on Sunday. So stronger than ever, and all of us proud to play together amongst such a great bunch of truly professional people with such a positive attitude towards any challenge that comes our way, molded with the magnificent years of top flight championship experience of Kevin Gibbs, the day where we finally lift the trophy of a well earned 1st place beckons ever nearer.
The BMP (Europe) Goodshaw band would like to say a massive thank you to Chris Wormald, Malcolm Brownbill, and Roy Waite for there priceless contributions to our performance on Sunday. Also a huge thank you to Neil Bailey (Timps) and Adam John (BB flat bass) who both did us proud. To all the soloists on the day you all played superb here's to the next one bring it on!
Report by Kyle Harrison.
